    What is formal organization?

Formal organization is a structured organization that work together to achieve a common goal. It usually follows a blueprint for planning and describing an organization’s roles, positions, and rules and procedures. Expectations define the official roles, which in turn define the formal positions and roles and responsibilities arranged into a formal hierarchy. A set of rules, regulations, and procedures governs this structure.

Meyer and Rowan (1977) define it as “systems of coordinated and controlled activities that arise when work is embedded in complex networks of technical relations and boundary-spanning exchanges.”
