What is Marriage Leave?
Marriage leave refers to paid time off granted to employees to celebrate the event of their marriage. It usually lasts 5 – 7 days, but the duration may vary based on the organization’s policies and become unpaid if extended further.
According to Circular 44/74, in India employees are entitled to up to 5 days of special leave with pay for marriage, providing their annual leave balance is at most 23 days.
This leave is not just a privilege but a legal entitlement for employees. It is considered special leave and requires prior approval from the employer. However, organizations retain the right to recall employees for specific work requirements in exceptional circumstances.
