9 Box Model
The 9 box model or 9 box grid is a visual tool used in HR for talent management and succession planning. It supports HR in analyzing employees’ performance and discussing with the respective managers about their potential. The model divides employees into nine groups based on their potential and performance.
The nine-box grid has two major sections; X and Y just like any standard graph. The x-axis describes the employee’s performance in their current role, which may either be low, moderate, or high. The y-axis usually describes the employee’s potential. The nine-box grid includes the following components; Dysfunctional Geniuses, High Potentials, Stars, Up or Out Dilemmas, Core Players, High Performers, Bad Hires, Up or Out Grinders, and Work Horses.
