The workforce has slowly started to return to their offices, in phases, owing to decreasing intensity of Covid-19. To ensure employee-safety, companies are turning onto contactless attendance systems at the entry points and inside workplaces. Facial recognition is one such technology that businesses are looking out for, garnering attention lately.
Facial recognition is nothing but a method of identifying an individual by using their facial features. It is so common that it is even used in smartphones to unlock screens. With Covid protocols all over, businesses are choosing facial recognition attendance systems to boost employee confidence and avoid workplace contact.
But what if we say that you don’t need a facial recognition system! Wondering how? Keep reading to know.
Why is facial recognition becoming prominent?
Before Covid, businesses in India mostly relied on biometric fingerprint systems to register attendance. With the outbreak of pandemic, the necessity to avoid touching any surface that might spread the infection has become prominent and had been ingrained in people’s minds. As a move to curb the virus spread and ensure secure log-ins, facial recognition hardware is placed at every checkpoint in and out of the organization. The objective is simple – minimize the contact as much as possible.
Although there are other means of contactless biometrics like Iris and vein recognition, the accessibility is limited to more significant sectors and organizations owing to the high cost per unit. The Facial recognition system in India seems to be a practical and cost-effective choice for businesses to foster safety inside the workplace.
You don’t need a biometric device with Keka
Increasing business units and mobile teams across geographic locations require several facial recognition devices to help your field workers and other employees mark their attendance. Altogether they become a vast expenditure because maintenance and replacement costs are something that businesses must anticipate and bear over time.
Keka eliminates the need for a facial recognition biometric device by turning your smartphone into a personal biometric device. The idea is to utilize the technology but not necessarily as full-fledged hardware devices. With Keka installed on your employees’ smartphones, marking, approving and tracking attendance is bliss.
Face registration process
When a user tries to mark his/her attendance for the very first time using the Remote Clock-in option on Keka App, a one-time registration process is required. This registration process is as simple as taking a few selfies. These selfies are used to create facial embeddings for each user so that users can be recognized and authenticated by the system whenever attendance is marked using facial recognition. Your employee can register their attendance by taking a selfie in the Keka Mobile App when he wants to log in. The registration process is pretty simple. Below are the steps.
Step-1: Open the app when you’re within the geofenced territory. Go to Me>Time>Clock In. Tap on ‘Register Your Face Now’.

Step-2: The app now opens your front camera. Line-up your face inside the circle and make sure that there is sufficient light on your face. Take off the glasses, masks or any other accessories covering your face. Click the picture by tapping on the circle below.
Note: The app would ask you to take multiple pictures.

Step-3: Your images are uploaded to the system.

Step-4: The images are further scanned and the system creates facial embeddings that are unique to each individual.

Step-5: Once the registration process is completed, you can proceed to mark your attendance by tapping on ‘Clock-In Now’.

Clock-In process
Once the registration is done, the employee can tap on clock-in to start their attendance marking process once he/she is in the defined geographical area (in case geo-fencing is enabled).
Step-1: Open the Keka app. Go to Me>Time>Clock In. Tap on Clock In. Place your face properly inside the circle and tap on the ‘✓’ mark.

Step-2: The selfie is uploaded and matched with the facial embedding created for the user during the registration process.

Step-3: Once the captured image matches with the facial embedding of the user, the system authenticates and allows the user to mark their attendance.

When logging out, the employees can tap on clock-out and take a selfie to authenticate themselves, and clock-out.
Note: The app may ask to take the selfie again when the image doesn’t match properly.
Benefits
Facial recognition attendance systems not only offer safety but also a variety of benefits to organizations and their employees.
Your smartphone is your biometric device

High accuracy
Keka uses the industry’s leading AI from Microsoft Face. Microsoft’s face recognition technology detects faces by picking up on more than 25 face attributes and compares them against the registered face in the database, thereby delivering accurate face recognition.
Safety coupled with security
Microsoft Azure safely secures data transfer and storage. It has unique threat intelligence that identifies threats of potential data breaches.
Integration with 3000+ biometric devices
Even if you are a business that already incorporated biometric devices, Keka HRMS can power your attendance system that can integrate with over 3000+ biometric devices. All the attendance and leave data are captured and further managers, HRs and admins can access the data.
